Pastel workshop on a Broadland landscape with huge East Anglian sky with John Patchett
After attending Grimsby School of Art, Kingston-upon-Thames College of Art and Brighton College of Art, John settled in Adelaide, where he lived for 19 years.
In 1994, he returned to this country, settling in Beccles, Suffolk.
Besides holding over 50 highly successful solo shows in Australia and England, John’s pastel paintings have been exhibited in Japan, New Zealand and with many of the leading art societies at the Mall Galleries in London.
His pastel paintings have been featured in articles in the ‘The Artist’ and ‘Leisure Painter’ magazines over the years and his recent biography, entitled “Painting from the heart” is published by Halsgrove
AIM;
Students will learn soft pastel techniques to create landscapes and different skies.
What will students need to bring:
- Soft pastels, pastel paper/card, old tea towel, tissues, drawing board or support board, wet wipes.
- Optional: Easel, eraser, stiff bristled brush, masking tape.
- I have a supply of Rembrandt soft pastels for the students to use – no cost.
- I have a small supply of pastel paper / card for sale.

Collage Cohesion with Lesley Munro
Lesley Munro trained at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee, graduating in 1984 with a B.A. Fine Art (Hons). After Art College she worked in Television and Advertising in London before training as an Art teacher and worked in Scottish education for many years. Lesley became a professional painter in 2016, and now lives and works in South Norfolk
In 2016 Lesley was the winner of Norfolk magazine Landscape Artist of the Year, and was awarded the Royal Society of Watercolours President’s award in 2020, at the SEAW Selected Exhibition with her painting ‘Beach Channels and Distant Pines’.
Lesley Munro is an artist who produces paintings mainly in acrylic and mixed media . She is much influenced by her immediate environment, by the hedgerows, winding lanes and gentle rolling landscape around her, but also by Coastal scenes around East Anglia and beyond. Lesley tries to capture her love for, and understanding of, the environment, open spaces, light, colour and vast skies.
In essence, Lesley works in a highly improvised way, though the subjects for her work remain recognisable, through forms that are highly stylised, she aims to reflect nature’s Talking about her paintings Lesley says ‘my process involves many sketchbook studies and drawings as a starting point from which a composition develops, and the imagery then evolves through the process of painting my predominantly water based, mixed media work’
Lesley has exhibited around the UK, her work has been used in magazines and can be found in corporate, public and private collections around the world. She is an associate member of the East Anglian Group of Marine Artists and the Society of East Anglian Watercolourists.
In 2022 SEAW awarded her the Daniel Smith award for use of colour. Lesley has exhibited in the Royal institute of Painters in Watercolour, Mall Galleries in 2023 & 2024, and in addition has participated in numerous commercial art galleries throughout across the UK.
AIM; The focus of this workshop is to make sure that each collage not only stands out alone beautifully, but also complements its counterpart.
We shall use a limited colour palette and focus on using different valued papers next to each other ensuring all elements complement each other, even when using so much variety in designs, techniques and patterns in papers.
We will be selective, look at composition, explore layering & texture and depth.
The final outcome will be to create a collage grid using collage papers created in the mornings. By following this process you create a cohesive body of work showcasing your commitment to a theme and a deeper connection with your audience.
What students need to bring
- Mixed media paper:- white or light-coloured tissue paper, watercolour paper, newspaper etc
- Brushes :- flat brush and a medium round brush
- Glue:- Matte medium, PVA
- A few textured things e.g. bubble wrap, wallpaper, anything with a surface that can be transferred onto paper.
- Paint – acrylic, tester pots of paint, inks in a few of your favourite colours. Black and white can be used.
- Scissors, ruler, masking tape and pencils.
I will provide some tissue paper and textures

Acrylic On canvas. Painting a river, landscape, East Anglian with Tom Cringle
Tom Cringle is an artist who was born in Norfolk in 1972. He works as a painter and an art teacher. He is self-taught and has now been exhibiting and selling work for nearly 30 years.
With his art Tom loves to paint the large skies that are seen over the beaches of Norfolk and Suffolk. In particular he likes to paint on big canvases which allow as much sky to be seen as possible, as well as showing the wide and beautiful beaches that stretch along the East Anglian coast.
In recent years Tom has also developed smaller paintings looking at landscapes and figures, particularly those working on and around the sea and land.
He has also painted cityscapes and views in towns, including New York, and has sold his work as far away as Australia.
Tom has had many exhibitions over the years, both locally and further afield. He also exhibits work permanently in galleries in Norfolk, Suffolk and London.
Tom works as an arts facilitator and teaching in forensic care in the NHS, and also he is training as an Arts Therapist.
Aim;To help strip down a landscape, composition, and develop a painting strategy and skills to work on larger canvas.
What will students need to bring:
Canvas, large if possible, and easel, printed reference material (I will send images). Acrylic paint and brushes, also pencils and basic drafting equipment (charcoal). I have basics to share for this that haven’t brought something or forget… but a canvas will be essential.
Will you provide any materials and is there any additional cost to the students or SAC? I may provide some basic for those that haven’t got them

Relief Sculpture in Clay with Caro Burberry
All levels of artistic/creative experience - this is a fun sculpture exploration suitable for all.
Caro is a lifelong artist with a strong background in print making and drawing having received a classical training in figurative sculpture at The Frink School. Her sculptures cast in bronze and iron are commissioned and exhibited in permanent settings worldwide. Caro has also led specialist creative workshops for over 25 years and worked as a guest lecturer at De Montfort University in Leicester. She is an elected member of the Royal Society of Sculptors.
What will students need to bring:
- A simple printed image to work from.
- A4 sketchpad/paper.
- Pencil and pen.
- Please wear comfortable footwear and clothing suitable to work in.
- A 5kg bag of Pottery Crafts Earthstone Air-Drying Clay available from www.potterycrafts.co.uk
- Tiranti Professional Hardwood Clay Modelling Tools - I suggest both sizes B10 and B7 (they are very inexpensive and excellent value for money! These are also available from the same supplier Pottery Crafts, see above website).
- Please bring a flat tray or board to transport your sculpture home.
I will have a selection of sundry items and modelling boards for you to work on at no extra cost.

Lino carving and printing with Katie Moore
Be inspired by beautifully intricate and colourful Moroccan zellige tiles
Working from her riverside Wivenhoe studio, Katie May creates Fleurs du Coeur - botanical lino prints made using traditional hand carving and printing methods.
Her designs weave together symbolic flora and fauna, reflecting on life and learning. Each print is paired with an original poem, deepening the contemplative themes in the work.
Together, image and words offer a calm, thoughtful space - and a quiet connection to the wisdom of nature.
AIM; Begin by exploring a range of cutting tools and blocks, practising techniques before moving on to your own lino block.
Drawing inspiration from the dazzling geometric patterns and rich colours of Moroccan zellige tiles, you’ll design and carve your own tile-sized lino block. The compact format means you may have time to carve more than one - building a small collection of interlocking or complementary designs. Clear, bold geometry translates beautifully onto lino, and the zellige tradition offers endless inspiration to draw from.
You’ll learn how to transfer your design onto the block and carve it using specialist tools - a slow, meditative process that rewards patience and focus.
Once carved, you’ll ink and print your individual tiles, experimenting with colour mixing and print techniques. Then, in a satisfying group finale, everyone’s carved tiles come together to print a single large piece - a collaborative work that reflects the very spirit of zellige: individual elements combining to create something greater than the sum of their parts.
What will students need to bring:
Please do bring along reference pictures or items for your lino cut design if you wish, though there will be plenty to inspire and choose from on the day. If you wear reading glasses, I would suggest bringing these to help when carving small details.
Will you provide any materials and is there any additional cost to the students or SAC?
All materials and tools will be provided for the workshop. For a group of up to 15, the cost of materials will be £230, divided by the participants. If there are more participants, please let me know, and I will calculate any additional costs.

This cost covers carving material, inks and papers. I will loan my own tools and presses for the day. I will provide participants with a suggested materials list following the workshop, should anyone wish to continue their lino carving practice at home following the workshop.
I will bring along a selection of my art work and gift items, which will be for sale during the day.
Health and safety: We will be using sharp cutting tools and heavy printing equipment during the workshop. A full safety briefing will be given, but all responsibility for maintaining personal safety whilst using the equipment is with the workshop attendee. I can not be held responsible for any injuries during the workshop! The workshop will involve extended amount of time seated and working intensely on drawing, carving and printing, which can be hard work on your hands. Please be mindful of any existing conditions or injuries and make sure to take regular breaks to ensure you your comfort.

Graphite with Trevor Osborne
Trevor studied graphic design at North Staffordshire Polytechnic before completing postgraduate studies in figure drawing at the Slade school of Fine art, followed by a degree in education.
He has exhibited widely with work shown in the Isle of Wight, Bath, Lymington and London.
After a period of working in education he returned to full time professional practice in 2011
His work spans portraiture, figure studies and marine subjects with a particular interest in light, movement and the relationship between people and animals
With over 50 years of experience in watercolour and a background in teaching, Trevor is a knowledgeable and approachable tutor. He has a clear and encouraging style making his workshops both informative and enjoyable, particularly for those with little or no prior experience of the medium in question
AIM :
- For all students to observe and practice various graphite techniques.
- To produce a drawing to a high standard

Subject: Suffolk hare

Teresa is Suffolk born and bred. As an artist her main objective is to capture the likeness and the personality of the subject. A pastel portrait has a dynamic three dimensional quality that far surpasses the static flatness of a photograph. She loves the tactile nature of working with soft pastels and the way that, by rubbing each layer onto the paper, she almost “strokes” the subject into life. She concentrates on wildlife an animal portraits.
The Aim of the workshop will be to create a beautifully detailed wildlife piece of artwork.
There will be an additional £5 on the day if the student wishes to use Teresa’s pastels and paper.

Originally from Scotland and having gained a BA(hons)at Duncan of Jordonstone art college in Dundee. After many years in Art Education she embarked on a full time a career as an artist. She is a member of the East Anglian Group of Marine Artists and the Society of East Anglian watercolourists. She is an awardwinning artist and has exhibited nationally.
Lesley’s work is inspired by her love of open spaces, light, colour and vast skies. She uses sketchbook studies and drawings as a starting point for her explorations of composition material textures, line and colours with each painting undergoing constant change until the balance and harmony of the composition is right.
The Aim of the workshop will be to produce a finished piece of work with a boat as the focus using watercolour and collage techniques. Upon confirmed booking a full list of equipment required will be provided.

Tom was born in Norfolk. He is self taught and works predominantly in oil or acrylic. He loves to paint the big skies that are seen in East Anglia. He exhibits locally and nationally. Tom also works as a teacher and arts facilitator in the NHS and tutors privately from his studio.
Aim of the workshop will be to plan, tackle, and paint a classic East Anglian landscape. Students will be expected to supply their own acrylic paint (lots of student white) and a medium to large canvas.

Rachel has been a professional artist for over 25 years, exhibiting and selling both internationally and locally (you may have seen her work in the Southwold Gallery). She moved to the Norfolk coast as a teenager. She is inspired by empty beaches, the changing seasons and light, and is influenced by new sights, sounds, tastes and colours. All of these experiences come alive in her paintings. She was the first female artist to have an exhibition at the Palace of Westminster.
This workshop will help to show how to work from still life and have fun with materials and colour, using a variety of materials: watercolours, gouache, acrylics, pencils, pastels, inks, etc. Hopefully you will find some freedom in the fun of art and confidence in handling different media in new ways to make art that is exciting and immediate.
You will be working with any materials you want to use, and adding different textures and effects, using what is in front of you for inspiration, not photographs, so that you are free from the restraints of slavishly copying to create truly individual paintings.

Nicola has a BA (Hons) Fine Art Coventry 1986 and is a member of the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA). She has held various group and solo exhibitions of paintings and limited edition prints from 1986 to the present. These include Mall Galleries, Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London and many others across the UK. She has also written several articles on techniques for national art magazines. Nicola runs weekend art courses from her studio in South Norfolk. Has taught art, painting and printmaking, in various schools, colleges and on art holidays and other settings for over thirty years to diverse groups of people.
Students will learn the basics of printmaking and will understand the drypoint technique using a Perspex plate to print from. The finished result looks similar to an etching. You will have an opportunity to create two small plates and to take at least one print from each - possibly more depending upon time. Medium: Portraits in oils

David Gillingwater AEAGMA BA trained as an illustrator and graphic designer. He produces portraits in oils, both formal and informal. Taking great inspiration from the classical masters of the Edwardian era, David aspires to give narrative to the individuals depicted. David’s paintings have attracted national interest and he has had work displayed in the RSMA open exhibition. He has also appeared on SKY Portrait Artist of the Year. David works and teaches oil painting from his unique studio in Theberton. As well as portraits David is known for his still life and local landscape painting.
This workshop will help students create more strength in their portraits/head studies. They will learn about using light to create depth and solidity. The day will include:

Basic anatomy of the face and how to draw it in preparation for painting.

Composition of the work.

Keeping the portrait simple to achieve the best effects.

A small talk on famous painters approach to portraiture (during coffee to give students maximum work time).
